What qualities do teachers look for when selecting prefects?

Intellectual skills shouldn’t come into it, as you don’t have to be the top of the class to be a good person, responsible person, which is what a prefect should be. You’ll need to: get on well with both teachers and other students – this doesn’t mean you have to be friend with everyone but rather get on with people in general; have good communication skills; show respect but also command it from your peers; be fair and level headed; show you are responsbile and mature; have good organisational skills; show you understand the rules and don’t get into trouble; not answer back, swear or mess around in class – if you’re the sort who doesn’t do homework, causes trouble or has a reputation of being a prat, or worse, amongst staff you’ll have no chance; show a commitment to the school and be prepared to get involved in school activities. Good luck!
