What qualifies as a disability?
A disability is defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as a mental or physical impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities. “Substantially limits” is defined as being unable to perform or significantly restricting a major life activity, in comparison to the average person. A “major life activity” is defined as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working.
To be human, is to have some type of a disability, or a disadvantage that puts in the minority. As we age, of course, the likelihood is higher that we devlop diabetis, arthritis, mobility issue, and so on. If your menal, emotional or physical health affects one or more areas of your life, you are determined, for ABLE’S purposes to have a disability.
