What qualifies a student as independent or dependent?
According to the Department of Education you are still considered a dependent student if any of the following pertains to you: • If you are under the age of 24 • If you are not married. • If you are working on a master’s or doctorate program • If you have no children or other dependants for whom you provide at least 50% of their support. • If you are not a veteran. • If you were 13 or older, if both your parents were deceased, if you were in foster care or were a dependent/ward of the court • If you are an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence. • If at any time on or after July 1st of the base year, did your high school or school district liason determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless. • If at any time on or after July 1st of the base year, did the director of an emergency shelter program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless. • If at an
