What qualifications do you need to become a zoo keeper at the World Famous San Diego zoo?
To be hired as a keeper by the Zoological Society of San Diego (which also runs the San Diego Wild Animal Park), a Bachelors degree in a life science is required, as well as previous animal experience. There is a lot of competition for animal care openings – there can be hundreds of applications received for a single opening. Many employees work at smaller zoos or do internships as ways of gaining experience, and then apply for non animal positions to get a foot in the door. ZSSD employees are required to join Teamsters – the Union requires all positions be posted in house. Someone already in a Union position will be in a good position to apply.
