What puts me at risk of having superficial thrombophlebitis?
The following may increase your chances of having STP or of STP becoming worse: • Advanced age, particularly in people over 60 years of age. • Being inactive for long periods of time, such as sitting or standing for several hours without moving. Not moving soon enough or resting for a long time after a surgery or illness may also increase your risk. • Having other blood vessel problems in the past, such as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). • Having a recent surgery or vein procedure, such as a phlebotomy, sclerotherapy, catheter (tube) insertion, or an intravenous (IV) injection. • Having other health conditions, such as cancer, varicose veins, infections, or diseases that affect the immune system. The immune system is the part of the body that fights infection. Being pregnant may also lead to STP. • Smoking or weighing more than what your caregiver recommends. • Taking birth control pills or certain medicines that may irritate the vein.
