What purpose does homosexuality (both types) serve in nature?
Well, firstly, I don’t think any studies have conclusively shown that nonhumans exhibit homosexuality, although there is a TON of anecdotal evidence suggesting they do. Personally, I think they probably do. If you’re asking what evolutionary purpose homosexuality serves, you are also assuming that it is genetic, which there is some evidence supporting, but again, no study that I know of has strongly argued that it is definitely genetic. Again, however, I think a lot of things point to a genetic cause. But if homosexuality is genetic, then evolution should have wiped it out a long time ago, as it seems that a member of any species less inclined to have sex with the opposite gender is a lot less likely to reproduce, and therefore a lot less likely to pass on his or her genes. So what could be going on? I came up with this theory in an evolutionary psych class, so it is in no way scientifically supported, but here’s what I think might be a reason: Sex is a very strong source and represent
Homosexual sex serves the same purpose that pleasurable and non procreative male female sex does in nature. It is pleasure motivated sex that is exists as an animal instinct Sexuality is motivated by the pleasure impulse; seldom is there a consciousness of ‘making babies’, especially in less complex species. In the drive towards pleasure, concepts such as the male female courtship norm become redundant. Procreation is a by product of male female sex, but obviously not of homosexual unions, which need not be an issue at all ….as it would be a catastrophe if all sexual intercourse resulted in pregnancies and birth.
