What prospects are there in universities?
Higher education in the UK supports 715,000 full-time equivalent jobs. This is set to grow as a result of the development of the knowledge economy combined with government policies to widen access in higher education. The Institute of Research forecasts that a further 1.5 million jobs will be created as a result of this growth between 1999 and 2010. Higher education currently employs more than 300,000 people, representing some 1.8 per cent of the total UK workforce.
