What prophecy was fulfilled through Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem?
As Jesus rode into Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday, the crowds shouted His praise. We’re told that even the little children were shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David!” At a cursory reading we may think that they were just mimicking their elders—just shouting what the adults were shouting. But when the teachers of religious law became indignant and asked Jesus whether he heard what the children were saying, His response comes from the Old Testament, “You have taught children and infants to give you praise.” Two important insights are found in Jesus’ response. First, Jesus equates Himself with God! After all, the Psalm Jesus quotes tells us that God had “ordained” children and infants to give Him praise. Here Jesus is receiving the praise—therefore, He sees Himself as God (which He is!). Second, we find that children are integral in the life of God’s people.
