The higher the forces of interaction between the particles (atoms, molecules or ions) in the substance, the higher the melting point. E.g N2 and C10H22 both are nonpolar molecules, but C10H22 molecules are bigger and more polarizable, so their interactions are stronger and C10H22 has a higher mp.
