On February 14, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning to consumers nationwide about a potential connection between Peter Pan® and Great Value® brands peanut butter and a recent outbreak of salmonella. The warning recommended that consumers dispose of all Great Value® and Peter Pan® peanut butter containers bearing a product code beginning with 2-1-1-1. The FDA’s report was prompted by at least 288 reported cases of salmonella poisoning in individuals across 39 states that had been linked to contaminated peanut butter. Shortly after the FDA warning, ConAgra, which manufactures both Great Value® and Peter Pan® peanut butter brands at the same Georgia plant, initiated a voluntary recall of the allegedly contaminated containers. At present, approximately 425 cases of salmonella infection have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control.
