What progress is being made to control HIV and TB?
A. Remarkable progress has been made in each of these areas in many of the 63 HIV/TB priority countries identified and surveyed by WHO between 2000 and 2006. Noteworthy increases in HIV testing and counselling of TB patients have been reported in some high HIV/TB burden African countries, as well as in some countries is Asia. In 2006, co-trimoxazole prophylaxis (CTXp) was provided to 78% of the HIV-positive TB patients (147 000) identified through testing, 2.5 times the rate of CTXp access in 2005. Globally, around 67 000 HIV-positive TB patients began antiretroviral therapy in 2006, more than double the number enrolled in 2005. Overall, 41% percent of diagnosed HIV-positive TB patients were enrolled on antiretroviral therapy. Coverage of HIV testing and counselling for people living with TB remains insufficient, however.
