I’m a network engineer with 30 years of experience working with computers. Right now I am doing some penetration testing and computer forensics. Hundreds of new viruses and trojans and all assortment of malware come out every single day. Some are so advanced that they have been around for years and have yet to be discovered or even if they have been discovered, they have not been able to stop them. There is no way to completely secure a system from it but the best thing you can do is to install the computer from scratch, add the drivers, the critical software, be absolutely sure there is no malware on it, then make an image of the system using something loke Symantec Ghost, then you can always restore it to that point.

You actually need two different types of programs. The first type is what you install on your computer, and can range from freeware to expensive security suites. If you go the freeware route, pick and choose carefully to get what matches your computer use habits and the other programs on your machine. (for example, I use Firefox, so I can use a plug-in that IE can’t). Cheap but time intensive. Best source for download programs (including freeware) is CNet’s Download.com. Or you can use an “Internet Security Suite”. Download or get it at a store, install and run. Does the thinking part for you. Easy but expensive. The Second part of the security process is the software you run on your brain. Learn how internet security works, and to quote an old TV show I liked “Let’s be careful out there, people”. You can get your computer education for free at ComputerShopper, CNet, ZDNet and Tech Republic. Read the articles and follow their suggestionns. I use a mostly freeware setup myself, with AVG
