My understanding is that the play stations have two sets of software available for them, though I am not a developer. There is Sony’s proprietary game development tools, which is where they really expect to make money, and there is there Linux Ports, which are frankly intended for them to be able to claim tax credits in the European Markets (where they can sell computers more cheaply than game machines). The machines Sony has sold Linux for are the Play Stations 2 and 3. And in fact the Play Station 3’s official linux (if there is such a thing, has Yellow Dog, a venerable Linux distributor, behind it. There have been home brew development tools for the PSP but Sony really doesn’t like this. My understanding — however my source I should warn you doesn’t have much more reason to know than I do — is that while there are a couple of scripting packages for the Sony’s OSes, the basic compiler which everyone uses is GCC.
