What products are used for Hair Straightening/Hair Relaxing?
Products used for hair straightening or hair relaxing are called hair straighteners or hair relaxers and contain either one of the following chemicals as their active ingredient: a. Sodium hydroxide or caustic soda or lye in laymans terms. In the U.S, these products are called Hair Relaxers and usually come in cream form. In the Philippines, a local popular brand is Ahglow Hair Relaxer ((AHGLOW Hair Relaxer)))which contains sodium hydroxide but made milder with additional conditioners. There are also hair relaxers that come in gel form and some local salons use a liquid or solution form of sodium hydroxide. NOTE: this type of hair relaxers are STRICTLY FOR PROFESSIONAL USE. Using them at home can severely damage your hair. b. Ammonium thioglycolate, called thio for short.
