Why did southern planters? What problems plagued the southern economy during the Civil War and Reconstruction? Why did southern planters concentrate an unbelievable on cotton production? What problems did this specialization create? curmudgeon1955 8:45 am on November 10, 2009 Cotton was a good cash crop- sold to northern mills and a lot to England. Planters wanting money plant crops that sell good. Southern economy was restricted in manufacturing capability, a lot of prewar manufactured goods came from England- the buyer of cotton, Northern blockade restricted imports so trading economy suffered. The problem with specialization is what happens when something-like a war- disrupts the specialized pattern, shortages and substitutes occur. Southern transport net had a bit of problem- the main north/south transport was by coastal shipping, the inland transport net work was mostly laid out to east/west – again Naval blockade interfered with the North/South travel and the inland movements N/S
