What problems do second language learners face when learning English?
I think pronounciation is only a problem if you learn English at a late stage in life, most young people are able to master the pronounciation to a certain degree. One problem is, I think, the plurality of the vocabulary: there are so many tiny differences between words, many words both in their Latin and German origin form ( e.g. When do I say ‘fatherly’, when do I use ‘paternal’? etc.), generally a huge amount of vocabulary compared to other languages. I also think the prepositional system is very hard to master cause it’s rather random. Generally, the problems you face will depend on your native language, a speaker of German might have very different problems in English than a speaker of Chinese. @Felicity O: Linguistically speaking, a language is defined by its native speakers. English is what all the native speakers produce and not what’s written in some text book. To say that native speakers of English can’t speak English is wrong by definition.
