What problems did CAIAPHAS the High Priest have with him?
1. John 8:46 -Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why dont you believe me? 2. The High Priest could not find any criminal charges against him: a. Matt. 26:59-60 – The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. b. Matt. 26:65 – “… He has spoken blasphemy!” c. Why? Because Jesus confessed he was the Christ, God’s unique Son! 3. This claim was why Caiaphas had him crucified: a. This action carried out the prophecy found in Isa. 52:13-53:12. b. Psa. 22:1a – My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Cp. Matt. 27:46 4. The High Priest and his other officials publicly admitted Jesus helped others but rejected him on the basis of his claim to be the Son of God [Matt. 27:41-44]!
