What priority level to use?
If it’s going to be run for a relativetly short period of time, or you really need the results in a hurry, use a higher priority. If it’s going to be run for a very long time, you can use the lowest priority (20). If that’s the case, you may also want to write data out periodically, so you can restart the job if the machine crashes. Note: You can renice processes downwards (i.e., to a lower priority), but never upwards. A final word. If you want to run a background job, try to make sure that the machine you are running on isn’t running someone else’s job. You can see what processes are taking most of the CPU time with the ‘top’ command. Submittig jobs with condor should take care of this for you automatically.
