What precautions does CSIRO take when doing gene technology experiments?
All CSIRO research involving gene technology is done according to strict regulations set out by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator. These regulations require safe conduct of gene technology research within laboratories and glass houses, and for the controlled and safe release of GMOs into the environment. The basic rule is that GMOs that CSIRO intends to release in field trials are carefully contained to minimise contact with other organisms in the environment.
