What precautions do plants take to maintain safety?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) prescribes education and training requirements and also sets exposure levels for worker safety. Precautions and training to maintain safety must be a continuous process, not just for TDI but also for other recognized possible hazards. Workers at a foam plant go through Hazard Communication training generally addressing all chemicals in a plant. This training covers what the chemical is, where it is and what the primary hazards are (toxic, corrosive, flammable, etc). They receive more specific training on the hazards they may directly work with or that are used, stored or handled within their department. With regard to TDI respiratory hazards, skin contact precautions, and reactivity hazards: physical properties, spill control, protective equipment, and health evaluations are reviewed. Depending upon an individual’s job duties, loading, unloading, and handling procedures may also be covered. Hazardous Materials training may be req
