What practical interest does fission have?
The fact that fission can result in a nuclear fission chain reaction means that, once the reaction begins, it can sustain itself, which means that energy production in a stationary system can be achieved. The practical consequence is that fission is a nuclear reaction that can serve as an energy source to meet societys energy needs. A nuclear process is similar to what happens in chemical combustion reactions, which also provide sources of energy because, once fuel or petroleum combustion begins, the reaction maintains itself without any need of outside action.
