Companies Investigation Branch (CIB) exercises the Secretary of States powers of investigation under the Companies Acts. (See The Law). These are civil, fact-finding powers, and not criminal investigations. However, the information obtained may be used to launch a criminal investigation. The information obtained may also be used for civil proceedings brought by the Secretary of State or in regulatory or disciplinary proceedings.
