What possible risks are involved with donating Cord Blood to the NJCBB?
The cord blood collection method insures that there is no risk to baby or mother. Cord blood is collected after the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut and the baby has been delivered. A sample of blood is also necessary from the mother. Possible risks and discomforts associated with drawing blood from the mother’s arm include, but are not limited to, bruising, pain, fainting, discomfort, or infection. Why does the NJCBB require informed consent of the mother in advance of delivery? It is the policy of the NJCBB to obtain informed consent for donating cord blood prior to delivery. This ensures that mothers/donors are completely aware of any possible benefits or risks involved with donation of cord blood to the NJCBB. It also provides that an opportunity has been given to ask questions and make an informed decision to donate.
