Attorney General Jerry Brown has built a commanding lead over San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in the race for the Democratic nomination for governor, according to the latest Field Poll results released today. On the Republican side, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman remains locked in a virtual tie with former Rep. Tom Campbell, but half of the voters are undecided. Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner continues to place a distant third in his bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, the nonpartisan poll found. A spokesman for Attorney General Jerry Brown who admitted this week he had secretly recorded telephone conversations with journalists, including a reporter for The Chronicle, was put on administrative leave Friday. Spokesman Scott Gerber’s recordings were “done without Attorney General Brown’s knowledge and in direct violation of explicit directions regarding office policy,” Christine Gasparac, press secretary for the attorney general’s office, said Friday. Gerber recorded an interview Wednesday with Chronicle political writer Carla Marinucci for a story about consumer activist Harvey Rosenfield’s criticisms of revisions Brown made to the summary of a proposed ballot measure that deals with car insurance rates.
