WHAT PIG DISEASES ARE TREATED WITH TIAMULIN?
The major bacterial infections against which tiamulin may be used for treatment or prevention may be described as pneumo-enteric infections – infections of the respiratory and/or digestive systems. Tiamulin is one of the most effective antibiotics for treatment of mycoplasma induced pneumonia leading to the condition called porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Recent study at Iowa State University showed that Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Myoh) when present in the pig’s lungs sets the stage for a more severe respiratory infections with viruses such as PRRS virus and/or swine influenza virus, and secondary bacterial infections such as with Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus suis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia (App), and Hemophilus parasuis (HP). When mycoplasma infection is wellcontrolled by medication with tiamulin, either alone or in conjunction with vaccination, PRDC is observed to be of less severity than when mycoplasma infection is full-blown. Uncomplicated Myoh infection is
