What physical therapy should be recommended to pregnant patients who have symptoms of SUI?
Pelvic floor exercises, with or without biofeedback, can be helpful in the antenatal and postnatal periods. Electical stimulation is also a valuable adjunct to some women. A trained pelvic physical therapist who can really educate a patient about these exercises is much more effective than merely suggesting a women do “Kegel exercises.” In the long-term, however, noncompliance typically leads to little or no improvement of SUI symptoms, so it’s vital for a patient to understand that she needs to be consistent with following her routine of physical therapy.
