What phase was the moon in when the Apollo 11 mission launched in July 69?
When the Apollo 11 flight was launched the Moon was a thin waxing crescent, and when the landing took place four days later it was a thicker waxing crescent. This was deliberate, as they timed the landing so that it occurred just after sunrise at the landing site. The landing site for Apollo 11 was in the sea of tranquility, which is located well on the right hand side of the face of the Moon as seen from Earth.
