What Permitting is Needed to Excavate Archaeological and Paleontologic Resources From State Lands?
Before anyone can legally disturb or remove significant archaeological or paleontological materials, he must obtain a State Antiquities Permit from the Montana State Historic Preservation Officer, and a Paleontologic\Cultural Materials Collection License from the DNRC archaeologist or the DNRC Trust Land Management Division administrator. However, a Paleontologic\Cultural Materials Collection License will be granted only to those individuals that hold, at a minimum, a Masters Degree in history or anthropology (for the collection of heritage properties), or geology or biology (for the collection of paleontologic remains) and have at least five years of relevant, applicable field experience. The restrictions and requirements for collecting or curating archaeological or paleontologic is more completely outlined at : Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Responsibility and Policy Concerning the Inventory, Excavation, Collection, and Disposition of Cultural and Paleontologic Reso
