What period were the musicals gentlemen prefer blondes and guys and dolls set in?
Actually, “Gentlemen” is set in 1924, when the original story was written. The “Keeping Cool with Coolidge” number sets the scene exactly. “Guys and Dolls” is in a sort of netherworld of the 40s and 50s. The Runyon stories were from the 30s, but it’s a sort of vague as to when it actually take place. It’s sort of the 40s thing, but as though the war hadn’t taken place.
