Approximately 4%-8% of women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy, and about 3% will experience IPV postpartum. Studies of pregnant women showed an association between having a history of sexual violence and the development of severe depression in pregnancy. In addition to screening for postpartum depression, clinicians are encouraged to screen for domestic violence as well.
