What percentage of Americans are pro Iraq war and what percentage are con?
It depends on who you ask – there is a tendency for any commentator to claim that the majority follows their views. And this isn’t limited to the war, it’s a common tendency when discussing any contentious issue. Best indications are that slightly less than half are in favor of the Iraq war as it is currently being pursued (i.e. post-Surge). Slightly less than half are opposed, but they tend to be more vocal. A small percentage – less than 10 percent, most likely – do not express a clear opinion one way or the other. Previous to the Surge, there was a clear majority of Americans ‘dissatisfied’ with the Iraq war; but most surveys did not distinguish those favoring withdrawal from those favoring a more aggressive approach. Thus some basically ‘pro war’ respondents were lumped in with ‘anti war’ giving a false impression of the true opinion of the public.
