What other speech problems are caused by stroke or injury?
Damage to the brain may also cause speech problems, including dysarthria and apraxia. Dysarthria is a result of muscle weakness or problems coordinating muscle movements. Symptoms include slurred or irregular speech, weak or hoarse voice, nasal quality to voice or a combination of these or other problems. Apraxia is not a result of muscle weakness, but a person cannot program the muscles of the mouth to produce speech appropriately. Symptoms include sounds within words may be mixed up or incorrect, words and sentences are said differently each time and in severe cases, there may be no sounds or words at all.
