What other research and development activities is RWE engaged in to reduce emissions by power plants?
RWE’s research and development operations also have their sights set on the future generation of power stations. This is necessary in order to be able to take advantage of the time it takes to ready the CO2-free power plant for serial production and make it profitable.As regards lignite, we are placing our chips on fluidized bed drying. We are building a prototype plant to this end at our power station site in Niederaussem. We are investing 50 million euros in this facility, which will be completed by December 2007. The technology, which we engineered in-house, is to supply dried lignite to the neighboring lignite-fired power plant with optimized plant technology, which is currently the world’s most modern lignite power station. The advantage of this innovative technology is that the efficiency of future power plants will be increased by another four percentage points.
