What other North American Mazdas share the same platform (i.e. basic mechanical layout) with the Protegé?
The 90-94 Mazda 323 3-door hatchback shares the same platform with the BG chassis Protegé. BG 323’s have a shorter wheelbase than a Protegé and use a different engine– a 1.6l SOHC 8-valve (B6-E) engine rated at 82 hp. Many other mechanical parts will also interchange, although most 323 body panels are unique to the hatchback. When a new platform was designed in 1995, Mazda stopped selling the 323 hatchback in the US. The 92-96 Mazda MX-3 (known as the MX-3 Precidia in Canada) shares the same basic chassis with the BG Protegé. The MX-3 uses longer front and rear control arms than the Protegé and has a slightly wider track width. The MX-3 also uses different powertrains than the Protegé; the 92-93 base model used an 88 hp 1.6L SOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, and the upmarket GS used a novel 130 hp 1.8L DOHC 24-valve V-
