The 90-94 Mazda 323 3-door hatchback shares the same platform with the BG chassis Protegé. BG 323’s have a shorter wheelbase than a Protegé and use a different engine– a 1.6l SOHC 8-valve (B6-E) engine rated at 82 hp. Very few parts from this engine are interchangeable with the 1.8l engine used in the BG Protegé; however, the Protegé’s 1.8l engines can be swapped into the lighter 323. Many other mechanical parts will also interchange, although most 323 body panels are unique to the hatchback. When a new platform was designed in 1995, Mazda stopped selling the 323 hatchback in the US. The 92-96 Mazda MX-3 (known as the MX-3 Precidia in Canada) shares the same basic chassis with the BG Protegé. The MX-3 uses longer front and rear control arms than the Protegé and has a slightly wider track width.
