What other fashions and trends defined the Northern Soul crowd?Answer: “Soulies,” as they called themselves, danced in one of two styles: a simple side-to-side strut which the crowd would often attempt in unison, not unlike a simple version of today’s “line dances,” and the expressionist dancing favored by breakout, experienced dancers who would perform highly athletic backflips, splits, and other movements. Because of this, many soulies often dressed in loose, bell-bottomed pants. Northern Soul’s unofficial emblem is a clenched fist in a black glove, a tribute to the 1968 Olympics, where African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos shocked the world by raising their gloved fists in a “black power” or “power to the people” salute while on the award platform. Many soulies would wear black gloves to all-nighters and often raise their fists in the air in a show of solidarity.
