What Other Birds Apart From Ostriches Have Lost The Ability To Fly?
The other very well known bird that can no longer fly is the penguin. To make up for the loss of flight, penguins have become expert and agile swimmers and divers. Today, penguins live only in the southern hemisphere of the world but their range extends from Peru and the Galapagos Islands to the freezing wastes of Antarctica. There are several different species of penguin, including the emperor penguin, the little blue penguin, the yellow eyed penguin, the jackass penguin and the Gentoo penguin. All species have the same overall colouring with dark blue or dark grey colouring on the upper side of their bodies and white underneath. The main difference between species is in the shape of their heads and necks – some birds have coloured patches whilst others have elaborate crests. All have stumpy wings that have few feathers and look like flat arms hanging down by the sides of the penguin.
