Answer Hi Holly, Thanks for your question. The Monkeypox virus causes this very rare infectious disease called Monkeypox. It is very similar to smallpox and in fact people with smallpox vaccination had a lower risk of getting monkeypox. Humans can get this disease if they come in contact with an animal infected with the virus or if they are bitten by the animal. It can even spread from one person to another by air.
