Recently, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, in a move supported by the Food and Drug Administration, announced the voluntary modification of over-the-counter cough and cold products such as cough suppressants, decongestants, antihistamines and combination products intended for use in children to state “do not use in children under 4 years of age”. Previously, many of these products stated they were not for use in children under 2 years of age. The change was made in order to prevent accidental and intentional misuse of these medications and because there is little evidence showing their effectiveness in children.
