What options are open to the fellow if the post-doc on the fellowship takes maternity leave or wishes to work part-time following maternity leave?
Fellows should be encouraged to think flexibly about the resource of their research to ensure it is completed as close as possible to the original timeframe. The options are: • The fellow can make a substitute appointment during the maternity leave. The salary cost must not exceed that of the post-doc on maternity leave. • The fellowship could be extended equivalent to the maternity leave taken provided the tenure does not exceed the fellow themselves. Quite often the tenure does exceed that of the fellow so we would encourage the fellow to make a substitute appointment during the maternity period. If this was not possible then we would consider extending the fellowship based on three conditions: a) That the fellow continued to work at the same RO and could continue to supervise the post-doc (they quite often move during or after their fellowship) or b) That the post-doc agrees to move with the fellow should they transfer to another research organisation during the period of the fellow
