The XT3 CNL microkernel running on the compute nodes interacts with an application process in a very limited way by managing virtual memory addressing, providing memory protection, and performing basic scheduling. This proven microkernel architecture ensures reproducible run times for MPP jobs, supports fine‑grained synchronization at scale, and ensures high‑performance, high‑bandwidth MPI and SHMEM communication. Service nodes run a full SUSE Linux distribution with specific Cray XT3 modifications.
