What on Earth is “gripe water”?

It only sounds disgusting, but it is wonderful stuff – gentle enough for a baby’s insides, and a delicate flavour and accompanying fragrance that I believe may have an anise base. It is clear and similar in appearance to water. It may have some natural sweetness to it as well, though I would strongly doubt that there is any sugar content. If you can get hold of some, try it, I can almost guarantee that you will enjoy it. It has been years since I had any, or thought about it, so I thank you for reminding me and award you a star!

Don’t know if it still is but it used to be VERY MILDLY alcoholic – or so I was told by a manufacturer of gripe water in the mid 1980s. It was the only explanation they could find for why MEGA-SIZED orders for gripe water kept coming from countries where alcohol sales are illegal. Gripe water, being medicinal, was allowed.
