What Occupations are in Demand?
Table 2 presents the top 25 occupations with the largest number of open-for-hire vacancies in the state of Minnesota, Greater Minnesota (defined as the state less the Twin Cities seven-county region) and the Twin Cities. A higher job vacancy rate indicates a more severe demand for workers. Counter attendants, cafeteria and food concession workers have the highest job vacancy rate at 33 percent. Food preparation workers rank second with a job vacancy rate of 31 percent. Where are the Worker Shortages? Combining the indicators of workforce demand described previously, we can confirm that some occupations are experiencing worker shortages. Most notably, these shortages occur in the following occupational groups: community and social services; healthcare support; and sales and related. These three occupational groups have a high job vacancy rate, an above-average turnover-adjusted demand and a larger share of vacancies classified as “always open.” At the same time, a few occupational group
