What obscene content is considered illegal under UK law?
The Obscene Publications Act 1959 and 1964 relates to the publication, distribution, showing, giving and possession of ‘obscene’ articles for gain or not. It is not an offence to merely possess obscene articles under this legislation but might be under the extreme pornography legislation by virtue of Section 63 Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill 2008 Obscenity is a difficult test to apply. For the purposes of the Obscene Publications Acts an article is considered obscene if its effect “depraves and corrupts” persons who are likely to read, see or hear it.
