Nursing is a great profession with tremendous flexibility and diverse opportunities to fit nearly every person’s career interests. Currently, the profession is facing a dramatic nursing shortage and the need for nurses literally grows daily. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has issued numerous reports and media statements on the nursing shortage. Many veteran nurses who are currently practicing are nearing retirement age. Unfortunately, the supply of new nurses to “replace” those retiring has not kept up with the demand. While geographic location typically dictates specialty demands, I feel comfortable saying virtually any area of practice has a need for more nurses.
