What NI cvontribiutions do I need for state pension?
You can apply to the Pension Service for a forecast of your State Pension entitlement; it will tell you what you have accrued to date, when it is payable and if there is a shortfall preventing you from getting a full State Pension. The Pension Service will also tell you how much you can pay in additional NI contributions in order to qualify for a full State Pension – it’s usually worthwhile paying it. In order to qualify for a full State Pension, you need to have paid NI contributions for at least 90% of your working life; currently men normally need 44, and women normally need 39. However, if you reach State Pension age on or after 6 April 2010, you will need 30 qualifying years for a full basic State Pension. If you reach 30 years before you get to State Retirement Age, you can’t stop paying NI contributions though. I’ve attached a link through to the Pension Service website for online forecasts. Regards.
