This was selected as Best Answer The employee manual for one of my previous employers explained that many people work in the city during the week then travel to the country at weekends. “Dress down Fridays” were instituted so that those people could travel directly from work on Friday evening without needing to change clothes. i.e. It is so that you aren’t wearing a suit while travelling a long distance. Even if you stay in the city, many people like to meet after work on a Friday evening. You might prefer not to wear your best suit in a bar. In short, it protects working clothes so that employees are better dressed on other workdays. Although many people think that “dress down” or “casual clothes” days are recent, in the Victorian era some gentlemen would wear tweed clothes on a Friday to prepare to travel to their country estates for the weekend.
