What modes of transport do people currently use?
Illustrating the public’s huge reliance on the car, more than eight in ten use a car at least 1-3 days a week, including nearly two-thirds saying every/most days. In contrast, around four in ten in each case say they never use bus or rail services. Overall, 63% say they use buses and 60% say they use trains. Usage of public transport in London is strikingly higher than in the rest of the country – 83% use buses and 84% use trains. Nearly eight in ten (78%) use buses and/or trains. A similar proportion cycle regularly as regularly use the train. There is considerable overlap between users of different modes of transport – indicating that people should not be compartmentalised as users of just one mode. For example, 62% of car users also travel by bus and 60% travel by rail. Nearly seven in ten bus users also travel by rail.
