What Modern Day Movies Were Inspired By Romeo And Juliet?
There have been several movies made directly from the play itself. There are at least four that I know of – a George Cukor film made in the 1930s, a 1950s Italian version, Zeffirelli’s 1968 version and the modern dress/modern set production in the 1990s, directed by Baz Luhrman and starring Leonardo di Caprio and Claire Danes. Then there was the musical West Side Story, which used the Romeo and Juliet story in a 20th century context – but unlike the Lurman production, this didn’t use Shakespeare’s own words. I’m sure there are others – someone else might be able to add to this.
