What methods of induction should be used and when?
Membrane sweeping should be undertaken before other methods are used. The procedure may cause some discomfort or bleeding, but does not cause any harm to the baby and does not increase the chances of infection to either the mother or baby. Membrane sweeping is not recommended the membranes have already ruptured. If membrane sweeping does not induce labour and the membranes have not yet ruptured (waters broken) prostaglandins are the recommended method of induction.
