Mike Arend The ancient Egyptians used strips of the stem of the reed-like papyrus plant for which they placed strips side by side, thereby forming a sheet, another layer was added perpendicular to the first set of strips (page 13). This writing medium was soaked in water and pounded with a mallet; once dried, the natural gum of the plant bonded the strips together to make some of the first known sheets for writing. The ancient Babylonians used a stylus to write on clay tablets, which they later baked to preserve (page 18). The Babylonians did not use zero in their number system but instead used a sexagesimal place-value notation.
